Going fishing on my Florida vacation – but do I need a fishing license?

Updated: December 19, 2025

Planning to cook your fresh catch in your vacation rental's kitchen? You'll need the right fishing license first. This guide covers Florida's saltwater and freshwater requirements, where to buy licenses instantly online or locally, short-term options perfect for week-long stays, and who qualifies for exemptions or free fishing days.

Staying in one of our fully equipped vacation rentals has the advantage that you could prepare your own "Catch of the day"!

Whether you plan to fish off your vacation rental property, with your feet in the sand off the beach, from a fishing charter boat or from your own or rented vessel, you'll probably ask yourself that question "Do I need a fishing license"?

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission answers this question and many others you may have.

Understanding Florida's Fishing License Requirements

Florida offers several types of fishing licenses depending on where and how you plan to fish. Saltwater fishing requires a saltwater license, while freshwater fishing needs a freshwater license. I needed both during my last trip, so I bought a combination license that covered me for the week. The state makes it simple for visitors with short-term options that won't break your vacation budget.

Convenient Ways to Get Your License

Getting licensed before you cast your first line is easier than ever. You can purchase your Florida fishing license online through the FWC's website, by phone, at tax collector offices throughout the state, or at most bait and tackle shops. Many sporting goods stores and county tax collector offices also sell licenses. If you're buying online, you'll receive your license immediately via email, so you can start fishing right away without waiting for anything to arrive in the mail.

Flexible License Duration Options

Florida understands that not everyone wants to commit to an annual license, especially if you're only visiting for a week or two. You can choose from one-day, three-day, seven-day, or annual licenses. The short-term options are perfect for vacationers who want to try their luck without purchasing a full-year license.

As of 2025, non-resident saltwater licenses cost $17 for 3 days, $30 for 7 days, or $47 annually, while resident annual licenses are $17. Freshwater licenses run $17 for 3 days (non-resident) or $17 annually (resident). Check the FWC website for current pricing as rates may change.

Exemptions You Should Know About

Several groups don't need a fishing license in Florida. Children under 16 can fish without a license in both freshwater and saltwater. Florida residents age 65 and older with proof of age and residency can fish with a free license. Residents with disabilities certified by the Social Security Administration, or those receiving disability benefits, qualify for discounted licenses at $13.50.

Active duty military members who are Florida residents also receive exemptions. If you're fishing from a licensed charter boat or pier, the vessel or pier license often covers all anglers on board, though it's worth confirming before you go.

Take Advantage of License-Free Fishing Days

Florida offers several license-free fishing days throughout the year when anyone can fish without a license. These typically include days in freshwater and saltwater, giving everyone a chance to enjoy Florida's excellent fishing opportunities. The FWC announces these dates annually, so check their website to see if your vacation coincides with one of these special days.

The usual dates for saltwater license-free fishing days are: the first consecutive Saturday and Sunday in June, first Saturday in September, and the Saturday following Thanksgiving.

The usual dates for freshwater license-free fishing days are: the first consecutive Saturday and Sunday in April, and the second consecutive Saturday and Sunday in June.

Good luck with your next big catch and always remember "the staff at Resort Rentals really enjoys fresh fish" !
